Omaha Symphony Mendelssohn's Italian Symphony Joslyn Art Museum - Witherspoon Concert Hall

Christian Reif, conductor
Maria Harding, flute

FARRENC: Overture No. 1
FOSS: Salomon Rossi Suite
FOSS: Renaissance Concerto
MENDELSSOHN: Symphony No. 4, “Italian”

Mendelssohn offers musical postcards from his trip to Italy: lively Venice, devout Rome, elegant Florence, and the sultry southern countryside. His French contemporary, Louise Farrenc, found inspiration in Beethoven in her powerful overture to open the concert. Lukas Foss reimagines music of the Renaissance in two works: the first, a tribute to Italian composer Salamon Rossi; the second, a concerto Foss describes as “an homage to something I love, a handshake across the centuries” – played here by the Omaha Symphony’s dazzling Principal Flute Maria Harding.
