Hahn-Bin, violin
with John Blacklow, piano

Hahn-Bin, former child prodigy, now a mohawk-sporting 22-year-old identified only by his given name, is fresh out of the Julliard School, where he studied with Itzhak Perlman and Catherine Cho.  Hahn-Bin made his international debut ten years ago at age twelve at the 42nd Grammy Awards’ Salute to Classical Music, honoring Isaac Stern.  In 2005, Universal Music released his first CD, HAZE, with pianist John Blacklow.  He has performed as a soloist with every major orchestra in his native South Korea.

Hahn-Bin plays an 1825 Pressenda violin and was in the news last August when he left it in a New York City taxi.  The $500,000 instrument was quickly traced and returned to him.

Virtuoso pianist John Blacklow, is a graduate of University of Southern California, Harvard University and The Julliard School.  Dr. Blacklow serves on the piano faculty of Notre Dame University and has recorded for Universal Music, Deutsche Grammophon/iTunes, and EDI Records.  In addition to his extensive touring background, he has made national television appearances in the U.S., Korea, and Japan.  Blacklow has performed many times with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, including the world premiere of “Soundings”, composed by John Williams for the opening of the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

This performance is presented by the Brownville Concert Series.

Performances

“[Hahn-Bin] established his virtuoso credentials with an astonishingly cool rendering of Fritz Kreisler’s ferociously difficult Recitativo and Scherzo,” dashing off tangled webs of multiple stops without any hesitation or struggle.”
-The Washington Post

“The music that he coaxes from the violin is a tour de force.  The velvet sound wallpapers the room, swelling ever more intense with each ensuing measure.  Eyes closed, Hahn-Bin is calling spirits.”

-Newcity Chicago
